We recently caught up with team Stellenbrau and were treated to an interactive Brewery Tour presented by head brewer, Stephen De Jager and a most interesting chat with owner Deon Engelbrecht, where we had the opportunity to “interview” Deon on their decision to partner as a Caylix Sport Sponsor at our various events and hear the Stellenbrau Story from the horse’s mouth:
Why did Stellenbrau decide to partner with Caylix Sport?
At Stellenbrau we have a deep commitment towards development, specifically in Sport.
What does your involvement with Caylix Sport mean to you?
Our participation and partnership bear good fruit toward our brand and products
Which events have you been involved with during your partnership with Caylix Sport and did it bring you the exposure you expected?
Mostly golf events.
THE STELLENBRAU STORY
Deon Engelbrecht finished his schooling and, as was the norm in those days, enlisted for his compulsory 2 year military service. He was based in Oudtshoorn and when the Parachute Battalion, nicknamed the “Parabats”, with their maroon barrettes came to recruit, Deon, always ready for a challenge, was first in the queue.
After completing his military service, Deon started a B.Agric degree, but realizing that his two favourite subjects were Economics & Statistics, he changed to a B.Comm, Business/Managerial Economics instead. An entrepreneur and businessman at heart, this was a much better fit.
Deon spent a number of years as a business consultant at the Potchefstroom University and started one of the very first PSG agencies in the country at that time (1999), in Potchefstroom.
Interesting encounters seem to follow Deon and so it happened that, during a visit to KZN, Deon enjoyed a few craft beers with friends that planted the seed of starting his own craft brewery.
Deon decided on Stellenbosch as the base for this new venture – a town filled with heritage and thirsty students. The wheels were set in motion in 2011 and Stellenbrau’s first beer, the Craven Craft Lager, was launched in 2012. This quality beer was voted top lager at the Global Craft Beer Awards in Berlin in 2014.
Three more beers were added to the range: Jonkers Weiss, Governor’s Red Lager and the Alumni Ale. Space constraints soon became an issue and both the Jonkers Weiss and Craven Craft Lager are now being brewed, under license and strict supervision, by Namibian Breweries in Windhoek.
The Governor’s Red with its subtle honeybush aromas and the Alumni Ale with deep, plummy, delicate strawberry accents are still brewed on site at Stellenbrau’s original home at The Wood Mill in Stellenbosch.
A big congratulations to Deon and his team with the recent announcement on Heineken South Africa's deal, which now makes Stellenbrau part of this global brewing concern!
