Howard-Tripp wins Curro Junior ITF 1 title
Second seed Joshua Howard-Tripp won the Curro Junior ITF tennis tournament played in Stellenbosch.
Howard-Tripp beat 4th seed Philip Henning 2-6, 6-2 and 6-2 in an all South African boys’ final. As expected it was a very entertaining match and the fans’ would have gotten their money’s forth if they had to pay to watch this action!
Henning, who beat the top seed Richard Thongoana for his place in the final, started like a house on fire and gave Howard-Tripp nothing while taking all he could. His court coverage is something to behold. Howard-Tripp was forced to play high-risk tennis by looking for the lines in an effort to keep Henning from staying in the point no matter how much he was made to run and from virtually impossible positions.
After winning the first set Henning lost a bit of his focus and Howard-Tripp upped his game. Howard-Tripp looked a bit fresher than Henning as well. In the end Howard-Tripp made use of every chance he got even though Henning made him work hard for the victory. It was a well deserved win for Howard-Tripp who played some impressive and entertaining tennis all week.
In the girls’ final the British domination of the Curro Junior ITF tournaments continued when Holly Fischer won the final without too much of a hassle against fourth seed Adrienn Nagy from Hungary. The unseeded Fischer won 6-4, 6-2 and thus continued where her countrywoman Eliz Maloney left off in 2015 by winning both Curro Junior ITF tournaments.
Qualifying action for Curro Junior ITF 2 started as well and will continue on Sunday at the Coetzenburg tennis courts.
